Tripura State Electricity Corporation (TSECL) is moving forward with plans to install smart prepaid electricity meters across the state, despite resistance from opposition parties and consumer groups. Critics point to past political opposition in neighbouring West Bengal and warn of digital surveillance misuse. TSECL leadership, however, maintains that human billing errors—not technology—led to past issues. Showcause notices have been issued to a billing agency involved in underbilling scandals. The utility has pledged consumer awareness campaigns, comparing meter reliability to UPI transactions and advocating for modernization.
