On July 17, 2025, banks across Meghalaya—including SBI branches—remained closed to observe U Tirot Sing Day, marking the freedom fighter and Khasi chief’s death anniversary. U Tirot Sing led the Anglo‑Khasi War (1829–33), resisting British land control before being captured in 1833 and dying in prison in Dhaka in 1835.
