India Expands National Oil Palm Mission
The government has provided an update on implementation of the National Mission on Edible Oils–Oil Palm. The programme seeks to increase domestic edible-oil production and reduce India's dependence on imports. Oil palm offers high productivity per hectare but also raises questions concerning land use, water requirements and environmental sustainability. The policy therefore has implications for both food security and ecological management. Increasing domestic production could influence agricultural patterns and rural investment over the long term.
