Heatwave Safety: Heat Exhaustion vs. Lethal Heat Stroke
As record-breaking summer heatwaves intensify following the solstice, major medical organizations, including the American Medical Association, have issued critical clinical guidance.
The advisory focuses on helping the public and medical professionals quickly differentiate between heat exhaustion and a life-threatening heat stroke. Key identifiers include tracking body temperature thresholds, monitoring changes in mental states, and observing sweat production. Because heat stroke can cause rapid, permanent organ damage or even death, doctors are strictly urging immediate emergency medical intervention at the first sign of confusion or a temperature exceeding 103°F.
