Censorship and Press Freedom in Chhattisgarh

Media freedom in Chhattisgarh has faced serious threats over the years. Local journalists working in Bastar, Dantewada, and Kanker have been:

  • Arrested without charges

  • Accused of being Naxal sympathizers

  • Denied access to sensitive regions

One infamous case involved journalist Kamlesh Tiwari, who was arrested under the Chhattisgarh Public Security Act for reporting from conflict zones. The use of sedition laws and surveillance continues to create a climate of fear.

Moreover, advertising bans, withdrawal of accreditations, and police intimidation are subtle ways in which press freedom is curtailed.

Yet, citizen journalism and social media are emerging as tools of resistance. Many tribal youth are now becoming digital storytellers, reclaiming their narrative and challenging misinformation.

Chhattisgarh's media stands at a crossroads. On one hand, it faces political pressure, digital divide, and censorship. On the other, it is witnessing the rise of bold rural journalism, digital activism, and people's media. The journey ahead will depend on how well institutions, civil society, and journalists themselves defend truth, transparency, and tribal voices.
