The Union Territory of Ladakh has introduced community solar greenhouses across several high-altitude villages to promote year-round vegetable farming. Designed by the Defense Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR), these greenhouses trap solar energy to maintain warmth even in -20°C temperatures.
For decades, locals relied on dried or imported vegetables during harsh winters. Now, these low-cost, sustainable structures are enabling communities to grow spinach, lettuce, and even tomatoes in snow-bound regions. The initiative enhances food security, reduces reliance on Leh markets, and empowers local women and youth in agri-entrepreneurship.
