Hyderabad: Concerns are increasingly being raised over the declining standards of journalism and news credibility despite the rapid expansion of digital media in the internet era.

In recent years, several online news portals and digital channels have been accused of publishing stories without proper fact verification, primarily in an attempt to attract clicks, views, and online traffic.

The use of misleading clickbait headlines has also become a growing trend among certain digital platforms, often creating confusion among readers and presenting narratives that differ significantly from the actual content of the reports.

In several instances, headlines have projected that a prominent political leader extended support to an individual, while the content of the article carried criticism or contradictory information, raising questions about editorial transparency and intent.

Media observers argue that journalism, which is expected to remain impartial and balanced, is increasingly being influenced by personal political opinions and one-sided narratives inserted into news reports by certain writers and digital platforms.

Experts also state that publishing personal opinions in the guise of news reporting is an unhealthy trend that undermines the principles of fair, unbiased, and responsible journalism.

According to established journalistic ethics, reports related to controversial issues or legal disputes should present all sides fairly, including the versions of the complainants, the accused, and the investigating authorities.

However, in the growing competition for faster publishing and higher online engagement, basic fact-checking and verification standards are allegedly being overlooked.

Particular concern is being expressed over the reporting of sensitive matters that fall under court jurisdiction, including cases related to women and minors under the POCSO Act. Media experts state that such issues require extreme caution, responsibility, and legal awareness while reporting.

Despite this, allegations persist that certain platforms are attempting to use sensitive cases for political narratives and digital attention.

Under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, digital media organisations are required to follow ethical standards and responsible journalistic practices.

Authorities are also empowered to take action against platforms found spreading misinformation, misleading the public, or publishing defamatory and biased content that could damage an individual’s reputation.

Experts in the digital media sector believe that preserving credibility and public trust is possible only when media organisations prioritise factual, balanced, and responsible journalism over the race for clicks and sensationalism.
