A Day When Independence Was Far Away

The crux of this image is that, August 15th is not marked as Holiday in this calendar. Why so? It was 1947 and the designers never knew 15th August would be a game changer date in history of the country.

But beyond more, this image has huge story to say.

This calendar was printed from Kottayam in Travancore Kingdom then. Travancore Kingdom didn't join India on August 15th 1947, as they declared their independence ahead. But with uprising and public revolt against monarchy along with attempt to assassinate Diwan Sir CP, it was only in August 1947, they agreed in principle to join Indian Union, but didn’t sign accession agreement, rather made a standstill agreement with Indian Union

It took 2 years of negotiation and host of treaties, both Travancore and Kochi Kingdoms joined Indian Union on July 1949. First Travancore and Cochin Kingdom joined together as one Kingdom called United Kingdom of Travancore Cochin and on next day UKTC joined Indian Union to become United States of Travancore and Cochin ( Thirukochi Aikya Samsthanam)

So until 1949, there was nothing special on August 15th in Travancore side.

To Know More Information Read that lead to Declaration of Travancore Independence and later accession of Travancore into India in 1949
